The Light Matters project is bringing light art into focus during Oulu’s European Capital of Culture year. Acting as an umbrella for diverse light art productions, the project also supports the growth of the Lumo Light Festival, ensuring that light remains a central theme in Oulu’s cultural legacy.

The project is led by Oulu-based media artist and art expert Leevi Lehtinen, whose artistic work spans animation, media art, and light art. Technology and moving image often play a key role in his works. Previously, Lehtinen worked at the Arts Promotion Centre Finland in the field of arts development, and he will head the Light Matters project through 2027.

Light Matters creates content for Lumo Light Festival and the Oulu2026 Opening Festival. The project also strengthens collaboration between northern light festivals and takes part in organizing the international LUCI Cities & Lighting Summit Oulu, which will gather lighting experts in Oulu in February 2026.
