Abandoned and forgotten places carry echoes of times gone by, leaving traces that tell stories of crumbling walls and deserted rooms. “Echoes” highlights buildings in Oulu that have been left behind by time and people. Four colored plexiglass panels, arranged in a circle in the center of Franzen Park, serve as gateways to these places—tombstones of buildings that reveal their spirits.

Laser-engraved images of dilapidated spaces and hand-added embellishments invite the viewer to explore the beauty of neglect and decay. The strong lights beneath the plexiglass panels make them glow, emphasizing the mysterious presence of these bygone places. Ambient noise music, with a unique sound segment for each location, adds depth to the work and creates an authentic atmosphere that transports the viewer back in time.

The installation challenges us to reflect on the life cycle of these places, the echoes of the past, and how we encounter the patina of time in our urban spaces. The piece was created by the Kaikukammio working group, composed of media students from OSAO.

What do the bodies of buildings tell us when their life has faded?
