About the artwork
On the Shadow Side of Light is displayed in the windows of Art Hub Pikisaari. During the dark evenings in the Pikisaari milieu, passersby are warmed by a sympathetic greenhouse fantasy of light and shadows built into the window frames of an old house.
The work combines plants, photography, and shadow play – the light from behind the windows draws out the spectrum of northern flora. Throughout human history, plants have been depicted in countless ways: two- and three-dimensionally, realistically and stylised, in black and white and in colour, symbolically as well as scientifically and artistically.
On the Shadow Side of Light continues this long tradition of portraying plants in its own way – softly, through the interplay of light and shadow.
