The search for Oulu’s ugliest place enters the voting stage

Residents of Oulu now have the opportunity to influence the creation of a light artwork for the Lumo Light Festival. Artist Katja Muttilainen will create The ugliest place in the city, an artwork whose location will be selected by the public.

The open call for suggestions attracted 723 responses, with more than 300 different locations nominated across the city. Based on these submissions, Muttilainen has selected four finalists that are suitable sites for the artwork during the Lumo Light Festival, taking place on 19–22 November 2026.

The following locations are now candidates for Oulu’s ugliest place:

  • Parking house Autosaari walking corridor, Kauppurienkatu 24
  • Former supermarket Hovihalli wall, Saaristonkatu 8-1
  • Toppila ruins, Panimotie 1
  • Dammisaari Rapumaja (Grayfish house), Kasarmintie 11

Voting is open until 19 June 2026 at 4:00 PM. The site receiving the most votes will become the home of The ugliest place in the city during the festival.
